Vivomed was an official supplier to the British & Irish Lions and have watched the incredible 2017 Tour to New Zealand with hope, frustration, adulation and ultimately unrivaled pride.

It all started in 2016 when Vivomed won the contract to supply all medical equipment to the 2017 tour to New Zealand following the successful supply to both the 2013 tour to Australia and the 2009 South African tour.

The tour party departed from their base in Calrton House, Kildare, some 8 weeks ago with all their medical supplies at hand which included products such as Vivolight (tearable elastic adhesive bandage) for lineout lifting  Vivotape P Zinc Oxide tape (the brown tape), in their bid to make history, win the series and defeat the back to back world champions in New Zealand.

As with all tours, there were highs and lows along the way with victories and defeats but crucially always improvement as the players from the 4 home nations gelled together and became one. It was invigorating to see the Vivomed range of medical products and tapes in action on the other side of the world and being used by some of the world’s leading athletes in the first game of the tour against the New Zealand Provinces on the 3rd of June at the Toll Stadium in Whangarei, in the North Island.

As expected, the tour got off to a slow start but with increased time on the training field, intensity in both preparation and performance increased as did the calibre of competition as the British & Irish Lions faced the top New Zealand Super Rugby franchises.

The preparation, planning and execution of the management, training and medical team was incredible as injuries were kept to a minimum week after week with both mid-week and weekend games in addition to training and recovery sessions. Vivomed is one of the leading Sports Medicine Suppliers in the world stocking one of the widest ranges of sports medicine products available which ensured they were perfectly placed to work closely with the British & Irish Lions medical team to acutely meet all their requirements.

“Vivomed have been a great help to us during the tour so far supplying all of the medical kit and equipment which we require on our 2017 Tour to New Zealand. Their services have been swift and reliable and I would be confident in recommending them to any other touring or elite sporting team.” Doctor Eanna Falvey – Head of Medical, British & Irish Lions 2017 Tour to New Zealand.

The series against the New Zealand All Blacks started with defeat in Eden Park as the All Blacks showed their class and experience before the British & Irish Lions fought back incredibly to win the second test at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington. This victory for the Lions was the first defeat New Zealand had faced on home soil since September 2009 which optimises the scale of the achievement. It all came down to the third and final test as Vivomed and the rest of the sporting world watched as history beckoned for the Lions.

The scene was set for one of the great sporting occasions and it didn’t disappoint as the result came down to the final few minutes of

the game. Both teams put in heroic performances and it ended all square at 15-15 as the series was drawn which many feel was a fair reflection on the tour. Both teams will be thinking it was a missed opportunity with the British & Irish Lions taking the moral victory of leaving the beautiful country of New Zealand without a defeat which many had expected and predicted.

At Vivomed we look back on yet another fantastic journey with the British & Irish Lions. It is truly a privilege to supply the elite rugby players from the home nations of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales with all their medical equipment.  The New Zealand tour was iconic as it resulted in Vivomed suppling the last three British & Irish Lions tours over 12 years including South Africa and Australia which completes the set.

We look forward to improving and enhancing our current set of products while developing and bringing new sport medical equipment to the market over the next 4 years to hopefully continue to be the leading supplier of medical equipment for the 2021 tour to South Africa!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with the British & Irish Lions for making this such a memorable and enjoyable tour to be involved with.
